A Grandparent is something extra special and a unique gift to be alive to see your children’s children. Praying for them is the best gift we can give our grandchildren. And before we become grandparents, we can and should pray for our unborn grandchildren. Praying the word of God is a sure guarantee of answers to our prayers. We know we need to pray, but sometimes we struggle to find the right words or the time to pray.

My daughter got married recently, and it dawned on me that I will become a grandparent at some point. So, I decided to start searching the Word of God, which prompted me to write this post on 10 Powerful Bible Verses to Pray for Your Grandchildren. God’s word is the perfect manual for parenting children or supporting your children in parenting your grandchildren.

Why do we need to pray for our grandchildren?

After we have gone through the challenging yet fulfilling job of parenting our children, we are in a unique position to pray for God’s blessings on our grandchildren. Having gone through this journey, we can reflect on our past and identify areas where we wish we had made better choices with our children.

Oh, what a joy when generations know the Lord. Paul in the Bible referred to the faith that was in Timothy’s grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice, and this same faith was passed on to Timothy. How amazing that three generations knew and served the Lord. Lois and Eunice nurtured Timothy’s faith. The Bible recorded that Timothy’s father was Greek, but Eunice was a Jew. It was the grandmother and the mother who taught Timothy the word of God and prepared him for his call to ministry, as we see in 2 Timothy 3:15, where it states that from infancy, Timothy had known the holy scriptures sufficiently to become saved. Eventually, this same knowledge was instrumental to his call to ministry. Grandma Lois didn’t just pass her faith on to grandson Timothy, but she must have also covered Timothy in prayers regularly. Grandparents are faith nurturers, and the most incredible legacy we can leave for our grandchildren is a legacy of faith in the living God.

In Deuteronomy 4:9 (CEVUK), God gives us important instructions as grandparents: “You must be careful not to forget the things you have seen God do for you. Keep reminding yourselves and share this with your children and grandchildren as well.” We have a responsibility from the Lord; if we are to pass on the faith, we must do so diligently. The generations that come after us need to know the Lord and be reminded of God’s faithfulness over the years. The responsibility is ours; God is counting on us to shape the future for the coming generations and to leave a lasting legacy of faith.
