Why do we need to pray for our children?

Parenting is a hard job but also equally fulfilling. With the best of intentions, we don’t always get it right. Sometimes it feels like we are doing trial and error, we desperately want to get it right, but the truth is that we will make mistakes along the way. We don’t need to despair when we get it wrong, but we can depend on Him, who owns the manual for our children’s destiny, to help us on this journey. Praying over these children is our way of saying to God that we can’t do it on our own and that we need Him.

The Bible referred to children as arrows in Psalms 127. It takes focus, experience and practice to shoot an arrow and hit the bullseye. So is parenting but it’s just that we don’t usually get that opportunity to practice or prepare before the child arrives. Unlike in archery when a wrong move signifies more practice, in parenting, we can’t afford too many wrong moves because our children’s destiny may be affected negatively by any wrong move. Our training manual on this parenting journey is the word of God.

Every child needs love, stability and discipline. Our responsibility is also to teach our children the word as commanded in Deuteronomy 11:19. But even after we have done our best in loving them and teaching them the word of God, things may not go as we envisaged. When things get complicated, we can still go back to our training manual. It has the solution to every challenge that we will ever face in our parenting journey.
